Have you ever thought of ways in which individuals in our different spaces can contribute towards the attainment of these goals? Have you ever thought of how as a young person you can contribute towards the end goal of achieving these SDGs?

As theSpace, we have been doing sustainable development goal work for the past six years and this year we’re taking the opportunity in partnership with the United Nations in Zimbabwe and the Swedish Embassy in Zimbabwe to share on SDGs and the excellent work that is being done to move towards attaining these goals. This will be a 17 week journey where every Tuesday we take the time to share and learn about every SDG and raise awareness on what the goal is about as well as what is being done to achieve that goal and this week we started with SDG1.

The first SDG aims at eradicating poverty. According to the United Nations poverty is the inability of having choices and opportunities which in itself is a violation of human rights. When one hears the word poverty what normally comes to mind is lack of money however as we reflected in the SDGs Twitter Spaces, poverty itself can be viewed from various dimensions – these include health, education and standard of living.

A look at the goal’s targets brings to light issues of equal rights to ownership, basic services, technology and economic resources by 2030 (Target 1.4.) as actions towards eradicating poverty, mobilising resources to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions (Target 1A) as well as creating sound policy frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, based on pro -poor and gender sensitive development strategies to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions (Target 1B) amongst others. These targets and others that have not been mentioned here then provide a guideline in terms of work that can be done towards attaining SDG 1. Some of the actions that were discussed include advocacy as well as increasing youth exposure to opportunities for development with main emphasis being placed on the importance of balancing our efforts amongst all the dimensions of poverty.

At the end of the day, if we are to take up the challenge of eradicating poverty then there has to be consideration of the fact that poverty affects different people differently and it can be said that poverty does not have one face. I’ll conclude by sharing this quote by Anyaele Sam Chiyson, “Could anything be better than waking up everyday knowing that lots of people are smiling because you chose to impact lives, making the world a better place.”

Denise Mangunda

theSpace SDGs Team Leader

follow us on

@theSpacezw

Have you heard of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
